چکیده

A Yukawa-like equation, introduced to evaluate the first order correlation function in a Bose-Einstein condensate, can be used to evaluate the atomic density fluctuations. It does not require a few mode approximation. We apply this approach to calculate the atomic fluctuations of a condensate of attractive atoms in a double-well potential. The atomic system undergoes a spatial symmetry breaking above a critical number Nc of atoms. Near Nc the atomic fluctuation dN inside a single well becomes very large and experimentally observable by a phase-contrast imaging technique. dN is related to the collective mode temperature, which may be different from the condensate temperature measured by means of the thermal tails. A one-dimensional array of wells is also considered.

Coherence Times of Bose-Einstein Condensates beyond the Shot-Noise Limit via Superfluid Shielding.

We demonstrate a new way to extend the coherence time of separated Bose-Einstein condensates that involves immersion into a superfluid bath. When both the system and the bath have similar scattering lengths, immersion in a superfluid bath cancels out inhomogeneous potentials either imposed by external fields or inherent in density fluctuations due to atomic shot noise. This effect, which we cal...

Phase Fluctuations in Bose - Einstein Condensates

We demonstrate the existence of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) and study the dependence of those fluctuations on the system parameters. A strong dependence on temperature , atom number, and trapping geometry is observed. Phase fluctuations directly affect the coherence properties of BECs. In particular, we observe instances where the phase coherence length is s...

Momentum spectroscopy of 1D phase fluctuations in Bose-Einstein condensates.

We measure the axial momentum distribution of Bose-Einstein condensates with an aspect ratio of 152 using Bragg spectroscopy. We observe the Lorentzian momentum distribution characteristic of one-dimensional phase fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the width of this distribution provides a quantitative test of quasicondensate theory. In addition, we observe a condensate length consiste...

Quantum field effects in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

This paper examines the parameter regimes in which coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates do not obey the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Stochastic field equations for coupled atomic and molecular condensates are derived using the functional positive-P representation. These equations describe the full quantum state of the coupled condensates and include the commonly used Gross-Pitae...

Disordered Bose-Einstein condensates in quasi-one-dimensional magnetic microtraps.

We analyze the effects of a random magnetic potential in a microfabricated waveguide for ultracold atoms. We find that the shape and position fluctuations of a current carrying wire induce a strong Gaussian correlated random potential with a length scale set by the atom-wire separation. The theory is used to explain quantitatively the observed fragmentation of the Bose-Einstein condensates in a...
